5 NaClO2 (aq) + 4 HCl (aq) → 4 ClO2 (g) + 5 NaCl (aq) + 2 H2O (l)
This is an oxidation-reduction (redox) reaction:
ClIII + 4 e- → Cl-I (reduction)
4 ClIII - 4 e- → 4 ClIV (oxidation)
NaClO2 is both an oxidizing and a reducing agent (disproportionation (dismutation)).
This is a gas evolution reaction, ClO2 is the formed gas.
Reactants:
- NaClO2 – Sodium chlorite
- HCl – Chlorane , Hydrogen chloride
- Other names: Hydrochloric acid , M , Uriatic acid
- Appearance: Colorless, transparent liquid, fumes in air if concentrated ; Colorless gas ; Colourless compressed liquefied gas with pungent odour ; Colorless to slightly yellow gas with a pungent, irritating odor. [Note: Shipped as a liquefied compressed gas.]
