MoS2 + 18 HNO3 → H2MoO4 + 2 H2SO4 + 18 NO2 + 6 H2O
This is an oxidation-reduction (redox) reaction:
MoIV - 2 e- → MoVI (oxidation)
2 S-II - 16 e- → 2 SVI (oxidation)
18 NV + 18 e- → 18 NIV (reduction)
MoS2 is a reducing agent, MoS2 is a reducing agent, HNO3 is an oxidizing agent.
Reactants:
- MoS2 – Molybdenum disulfide
- HNO3 – Nitric acid

- Appearance: Colorless, yellow or red fuming liquid ; Colourless-to-yellow liquid with pungent odour ; Colorless, yellow, or red, fuming liquid with an acrid, suffocating odor. [Note: Often used in an aqueous solution. Fuming nitric acid is concentrated nitric acid that contains dissolved nitrogen dioxide.]
Products:
- H2MoO4
- H2SO4 – Sulfuric acid
