2 KMnO4 (aq) + 5 SO2 (aq) + 2 H2O (l) → K2SO4 (aq) + 2 MnSO4 (aq) + 2 H2SO4 (aq)
This is an oxidation-reduction (redox) reaction:
2 MnVII + 10 e- → 2 MnII (reduction)
5 SIV - 10 e- → 5 SVI (oxidation)
KMnO4 is an oxidizing agent, SO2 is a reducing agent.
