Ca(IO3)2 (s) + 10 KI (aq) + 12 HCl (aq) → 6 I2 (s) + CaCl2 (aq) + 10 KCl (aq) + 6 H2O (l)
This is an oxidation-reduction (redox) reaction:
10 I-I - 10 e- → 10 I0 (oxidation)
2 IV + 10 e- → 2 I0 (reduction)
KI is a reducing agent, Ca(IO3)2 is an oxidizing agent (synproportionation (comproportionation)).
Reactants:
- Ca(IO3)2 – Calcium diiodate
- KI
- HCl – Chlorane , Hydrogen chloride
- Other names: Hydrochloric acid , M , Uriatic acid
- Appearance: Colorless, transparent liquid, fumes in air if concentrated ; Colorless gas ; Colourless compressed liquefied gas with pungent odour ; Colorless to slightly yellow gas with a pungent, irritating odor. [Note: Shipped as a liquefied compressed gas.]
