6 KMnO4 (aq) + 10 NO (g) + 9 H2SO4 (aq) → 10 HNO3 (aq) + 6 MnSO4 (aq) + 3 K2SO4 (aq) + 4 H2O (l)
This is an oxidation-reduction (redox) reaction:
6 MnVII + 30 e- → 6 MnII (reduction)
10 NII - 30 e- → 10 NV (oxidation)
KMnO4 is an oxidizing agent, NO is a reducing agent.
Reactants:
- KMnO4 – Potassium manganate(VII)
- NO – Nitrogen monoxide , Oxidonitrogen(•) (additive)
- H2SO4 – Sulfuric acid
Products:
- HNO3 – Nitric acid
- Other names: Aqua fortis , Spirit of niter , Eau forte
- Appearance: Colorless, yellow or red fuming liquid ; Colourless-to-yellow liquid with pungent odour ; Colorless, yellow, or red, fuming liquid with an acrid, suffocating odor. [Note: Often used in an aqueous solution. Fuming nitric acid is concentrated nitric acid that contains dissolved nitrogen dioxide.]
