2 KMnO2 + SnCl2 + 8 HCl → SnCl4 + 2 MnCl2 + 2 KCl + 4 H2O
This is an oxidation-reduction (redox) reaction:
2 MnIII + 2 e- → 2 MnII (reduction)
SnII - 2 e- → SnIV (oxidation)
KMnO2 is an oxidizing agent, SnCl2 is a reducing agent.
Reactants:
- KMnO2
- SnCl2 – Tin(II) chloride , Tin dichloride
- HCl – Chlorane , Hydrogen chloride
- Other names: Hydrochloric acid , M , Uriatic acid
- Appearance: Colorless, transparent liquid, fumes in air if concentrated ; Colorless gas ; Colourless compressed liquefied gas with pungent odour ; Colorless to slightly yellow gas with a pungent, irritating odor. [Note: Shipped as a liquefied compressed gas.]
