K2Cr2O7 (aq) + 14 HCl (aq) → 2 CrCl2 (aq) + 2 KCl (aq) + 4 Cl2 (g) + 7 H2O (l)
This is an oxidation-reduction (redox) reaction:
8 Cl-I - 8 e- → 8 Cl0 (oxidation)
2 CrVI + 8 e- → 2 CrII (reduction)
HCl is a reducing agent, K2Cr2O7 is an oxidizing agent.
This is a gas evolution reaction, Cl2 is the formed gas.
Reactants:
- K2Cr2O7 – Potassium dichromate(VI)
- HCl – Chlorane , Hydrogen chloride
