2 KIO3 (aq) + 5 H2O2 (aq) + 2 HCl (aq) → I2 (s) + 2 KCl (aq) + 5 O2 (g) + 6 H2O (l)
This is an oxidation-reduction (redox) reaction:
2 IV + 10 e- → 2 I0 (reduction)
10 O-I - 10 e- → 10 O0 (oxidation)
KIO3 is an oxidizing agent, H2O2 is a reducing agent.
This is a precipitation reaction: I2 is the formed precipitate.
This is a gas evolution reaction, O2 is the formed gas.
Reactants:
- KIO3 – Potassium iodate
- H2O2 – Hydrogen peroxide
- HCl – Chlorane , Hydrogen chloride
- Other names: Hydrochloric acid , M , Uriatic acid
- Appearance: Colorless, transparent liquid, fumes in air if concentrated ; Colorless gas ; Colourless compressed liquefied gas with pungent odour ; Colorless to slightly yellow gas with a pungent, irritating odor. [Note: Shipped as a liquefied compressed gas.]
