K2Cr2O7 + 2 NO + 4 H2SO4 → 2 HNO3 + Cr2(SO4)3 + K2SO4 + 3 H2O
This is an oxidation-reduction (redox) reaction:
2 NII - 6 e- → 2 NV (oxidation)
2 CrVI + 6 e- → 2 CrIII (reduction)
NO is a reducing agent, K2Cr2O7 is an oxidizing agent.
Reactants:
- K2Cr2O7 – Potassium dichromate(VI)
- NO – Nitrogen monoxide , Oxidonitrogen(•) (additive)
- H2SO4 – Sulfuric acid
Products:
- HNO3 – Nitric acid
- Other names: Aqua fortis , Spirit of niter , Eau forte
- Appearance: Colorless, yellow or red fuming liquid ; Colourless-to-yellow liquid with pungent odour ; Colorless, yellow, or red, fuming liquid with an acrid, suffocating odor. [Note: Often used in an aqueous solution. Fuming nitric acid is concentrated nitric acid that contains dissolved nitrogen dioxide.]
- Cr2(SO4)3 – Chromium(III) sulfate
- K2SO4
- H2O – Water, oxidane
