2 H2S + 2 H2SO4 + K2MnO4 → 2 S + MnSO4 + K2SO4 + 4 H2O
This is an oxidation-reduction (redox) reaction:
MnVI + 4 e- → MnII (reduction)
2 S-II - 4 e- → 2 S0 (oxidation)
K2MnO4 is an oxidizing agent, H2S is a reducing agent.
Reactants:
- H2S – Hydrogen sulfide

- Appearance: Colorless gas ; Colourless compressed liquefied gas with characteristic odour of rotten eggs ; Colorless gas with a strong odor of rotten eggs. [Note: Sense of smell becomes rapidly fatigued & can NOT be relied upon to warn of the continuous presence of H2S. Shipped as a liquefied compressed gas.]
